Ghiță Licu

Gheorghe "Ghiță" Licu (born December 1, 1945 in Fierbinți , Ilfov County ; † April 8, 2014 in Romania ) was a Romanian handball player ( KM ) and handball coach .

With the Romanian national team , he was in 1970 and 1974 world champion and won at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , the bronze and in 1976 in Montreal the silver medal. Licu played 197 international matches from 1966 , in which he scored 328 goals.

In 1993 Licu came to Germany and became a youth coach at SC Magdeburg . From 1999 he was assistant coach of Alfreð Gíslason and in 2001 German champions and 2002 EHF Champions League winner. From January to June 2006 he was the head coach of the SCM. Then he returned to his Romanian homeland.

His son Robert Licu also became a handball player.

On the night of April 8, 2014, Ghiță Licu died of cancer.
