At the XXIII. The 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles hosted two handball competitions.

The team of Yugoslavia won the men's Olympic championship ahead of the Federal Republic of Germany and Romania . In the women's category, the team from Yugoslavia also won Olympic gold, ahead of South Korea and the People's Republic of China .

Due to the boycott of the games by numerous strong handball nations of the Eastern Bloc , the results of the Olympic qualification were invalid. The German men's national handball team , which finished second in the Olympic tournament, had missed the qualification after seventh place at the 1982 World Cup and third place at the B-WM 1983, but was ultimately able to participate in Los Angeles due to the withdrawal of other teams.
