Gheorghe Covaciu

Gheorghe Covaciu (born July 8, 1957 in Buzău ) is a former Romanian handball player .

He started playing handball at CSȘ Buzău and was a right back player and right winger. In 1976 he signed with Dinamo and two years later with Știința Bacău . In 1980 he moved to HC Minaur Baia Mare , where he spent the largest and most successful part of his career. With the club he won the IHF Cup in 1984/85 and 1987/88 . After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 he played in Portugal for Benfica Lisbon and Sporting Lisbon and finally in Spain for BM Ciudad Real .

For the Romanian national team , Covaciu played 73 international matches in which he scored 150 goals. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he won the bronze medal with Romania. At the 1986 World Cup he was ninth with Romania.

After his active career, Covaciu became a coach in Germany in 1995. He later went back to Romania, where he mainly coached women's teams. Stations of his coaching career were Rapid Bucharest , with whom he was champion in 2003 and cup winner in 2004, Universitatea Jolidon Cluj , CSM Ploieşti , SC Mureşul Târgu Mureş and CSM Roman .
