The FC Astra Giurgiu is a Romanian football club from Giurgiu . The club, which was called FC Astra Ploieşti until September 2012 , was founded in Ploieşti . With the renaming, the move from the Astra Stadium to the Stadionul Marin Anastasovici also took place . The first team has been playing in League 1 , the first Romanian football league , since 2009 . In 2016 Giurgiu became Romanian champion for the first time.

history

The club was founded in 1934 and was promoted to the first division of Romania for the first time in 1998 , where he eventually played for five years. In 2003 the club merged with local rivals FC Petrolul Ploieşti . In 2005 the association was re-established by Ioan Niculae . In 2007 the name of the club changed to FC Ploieşti and then to CSM Ploieşti . In January 2009, Marius Șumudică was the club's coach. After Ion Moldovan's appointment as technical director, Șumudică terminated his contract on May 10, 2009. Moldovan took over the coaching position and with him the promotion to League 1 succeeded at the end of the 2008/09 season .

On June 13, 2009, the old name Astra Ploieşti was reverted to and instead of the previous colors yellow and blue, the traditional colors black and white were again adopted. Already after the third day of the 2009/10 season , the coach Ion Moldovan was dismissed and replaced by the Italian Nicolò Napoli . This was replaced on April 19, 2010 by Marin Barbu , with whom the club was able to prevent immediate relegation. On June 14, 2010 with Mihai Stoichiță a new coach was introduced, but this could not meet the expectations placed in him and was dismissed on August 31, 2010 after Astra had only won four points in the first six championship games. From September 5, 2010, the team was trained by Tibor Selymes , with whom a placement in the middle of the table was achieved in the 2010/11 season . But already two game days after the start of the 2011/12 season Selymes had to vacate his coaching chair on August 1, 2011 and was replaced on August 11, 2011 by Marius Șumudică . After ten championship games, in which Astra was unbeaten, followed on October 27, 2011 from the Cupa României 2011/12 by a loss to local rivals Petrolul Ploieşti . Three days later, Șumudică was sacked because he had refused to follow the replacement instructions of the patron Ioan Niculae, which this had given in the half-time break of the championship game against Rapid Bucharest . Tibor Selymes returned to coach on November 3, 2011, but was sacked for the second time during the same season after losing at home on December 17, 2011 to CFR Cluj . The Portuguese Toni was presented as his successor on January 6, 2012 , from whom the club separated again on March 26, 2012 after poor results in the first five championship games. He was replaced by Mircea Rednic on March 29, 2012 .

The most successful season to date was played by Astra in 2013/14 when they were runner-up in League 1, just five points behind champions Steaua Bucharest . Against Steaua, the team also won the final of the Romanian Cup 4-2 on penalties. The following season, Astra prevailed in the play-offs of the UEFA Europa League against Olympique Lyon and reached the group stage. In 2015/16 , Astra became champions for the first time with five points ahead of Steaua Bucharest.
