The FC Sibiu is a Romanian football club based in Sibiu ( Romanian Sibiu ). Since the 2018/19 season , the club has been competing in League 1 , the highest Romanian division.

history

The club was founded in the spring of 2015 in order to have a football club in the city again after the dissolution of CSU Voin Siba Sibiu . In its first season, FC Hermannstadt won the league IV championship and prevailed in the playoffs, making it to league III . In the next season, the promotion succeeded again, which the club secured four game days before the end of the season. On the fourth last matchday of the 2017/18 season, Sibiu celebrated promotion to League 1 after a 1-1 draw at FC Chindia Târgovişte . In the Romanian Cup , the club reached the cup final in 2018 through victories over Steaua Bucharest in the quarter-finals and Gaz Metan Mediaș in the semi-finals, where they met CS Universitatea Craiova and finally lost 2-0. Sibiu is the first second division team in 36 years to make it into the cup final.

In its first season in League 1, the club was able to conquer the relegation place by beating direct competitor FC Dunărea Călărași on the last day of the game. In the relegation, Sibiu met Universitatea Cluj , third in the second division. There, Sibiu secured themselves with a 2-0 away win despite a defeat in the second leg with 0-1 to stay up.

Stadion

FC Hermannstadt plays its home games in the Stadionul Municipal, which can hold around 5,000 spectators . The stadium has been renewed since May 2018 to meet the requirements for League 1 . After the renovation, the stadium will have 19,000 seats. Due to the ongoing renovation, the club moved to the Târgu Mureș Municipal Stadium for the first home games of the 2018/19 season . Due to numerous problems with the renovation, the association was only able to move back to Sibiu in May 2019. The construction work continued during the summer break. In the 2019/20 season they played again in Târgu Mureș. Since the 18th matchday the team has been playing in the home stadium in Sibiu again.
