CS Universitatea Craiova is a Romanian football club from Craiova . He currently plays in League 1 , the highest Romanian division.

history

CS Universitatea Craiova was created in 2013 when FC Universitatea Craiova was banned from the Romanian Football Association. Thus the city of Craiova lost its soccer team. In order to continue to have a football club in the city, Universitatea Craiova was founded.

On August 14, 2013, CS Universitatea Craiova was admitted to the Romanian Football Association and started in Liga II . The club played its first game on August 27 in the Cupa României against Pandurii Târgu Jiu II , which CS Universitatea Craiova won 6-1.

In the 2013/14 season, the club was first in Serie II of League II and rose to the first division. In the following season, the club was able to assert itself well in League I with a 5th place.

In the 2016/17 season, the Universitatea Craiova took 5th place in League 1 and was therefore eligible for the 2nd round of the UEFA Europa League qualification in the 2017/18 season. There they were eliminated after two defeats against AC Milan .

The club achieved its best position in the league to date with 3rd place in the 2017/18 season . In the same season succeeded by winning the Cupa României with a 2-0 victory in the final against the second division club FC Hermannstadt . By winning the cup, Craiova entered the 3rd round of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League , where they failed at RB Leipzig .
