The Divizia A 1998/99 was the 61st season of the highest Romanian football league . It started on August 1, 1998 and ended on June 12, 1999 . Games were closed from mid-December to early March ( winter break ).

Champion was Rapid Bucharest .

The 18 teams played against each other twice on 34 match days. The cup winner took part in the UEFA Cup for the first time, as the European Cup Winners' Cup was discontinued with the 1998/99 season . The three last-place teams went into the Divizia B from. There were three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, it was not the goal difference that decided , but the direct comparison .
