Divizia A 1978/79

The Divizia A 1979/80 was the 42nd season in the history of the Romanian football league Divizia A. It began on August 12, 1979 and ended on June 25, 1980 . The game was closed from December 6th to the beginning of March ( winter break ).

Universitatea Craiova became master . Runner-up Steaua Bucharest won the last game of the season at the new champions 2-1, but would have needed a win with at least four goals difference to win the title.

The 18 teams played against each other twice on 34 match days. The three last-place teams went into the Divizia B from. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, the goal difference decided .
