Rodion Doru Gorun Cămătaru (born June 22, 1958 in Strehaia , Mehedinți County ) is a former Romanian football player . He played a total of 422 games in Divizia A , the First Division and the Ehrendivision . In 1987 he won the Golden Shoe . As a national player Cămătaru took part in the European Football Championship in 1984 and the World Cup in 1990 .

Player career

Cămătaru began at the age of 12 in his hometown Strehaia with playing football in the local club Progresul Strehaia. At the age of 16, he moved to the nearest first division club, Universitatea Craiova , which was one of the best Romanian clubs in the 1970s. On November 10, 1974 he made his debut in the top Romanian league, Divizia A, when playing against CFR Cluj . At Universitatea Craiova, Cămătaru was regularly used in the early years of his career, but he - although a striker - hardly scored any goals.

The breakthrough as a scorer came Cămătaru in the 1978/79 season when he was able to score 13 goals. In the following seasons he played a major role as a reliable goalscorer in the fact that Uni Craiova won the Romanian championship twice and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1982/83 season . He also won the Romanian Cup four times with Uni Craiova during this time.

In 1986, Cămătaru decided to leave Uni Craiova after 12 years and switch to league rivals Dinamo Bucharest , as Uni Craiova was still among the Romanian leaders, but the championship had become unattainable due to the dominance of the Bucharest clubs. In his three years at Dinamo he could not win a single title while with the team, but received in 1987 as Europe's top scorer with 44 goals in the Divizia A the Golden Boot .

In 1989 Cămătaru received permission from the Romanian government to move abroad. He then joined the Belgian first division club Sporting Charleroi . There he was never able to prove his goal threat. After Charleroi had narrowly avoided relegation, he moved to SC Heerenveen in the Dutch honor division during the winter break of the 1990/91 season . Here, too, the season was unsatisfactory, because at the end of the season there was relegation to the Eerste Divisie . After three years in Holland, Cămătaru ended his career in 1993. His last game for Heerenveen was the final of the KNVB Cup , which was won by Ajax Amsterdam , but saw Cămătaru again as a goal scorer.

He has scored 7 goals in 47 European Cup games and with 198 goals in 378 championship games he is the second most successful goalscorer of all time for Divizia A after Dudu Georgescu .

Golden Shoe 1987

Cămătaru's award as Europe's top scorer in 1987 is controversial due to suspected manipulation, as he had scored 20 of his 44 goals in the last six games of the season. Thereupon 20 years later the runner-up Toni Polster was also awarded a Golden Shoe.

National team

Cămătaru played a total of 75 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored 22 goals. He made his debut on December 13, 1978 against Greece . Cămătaru took part in the European Football Championship in France in 1984 and was used in all three matches. National coach Emerich Jenei had also nominated him for the soccer World Cup in Italy in 1990 , but did not use him. After the tournament Cămătaru played two more international matches and then ended his international career.

For the Romanian U21 national team, he scored one goal in 3 international matches.

Time after the career

Cămătaru has successfully completed a degree in economics . After the end of his active career, Cămătaru was first president of Universitatea Craiova from 1994 to 1996 , before he worked as a player's agent from 1996 to 2003. From 2003 to 2004 he was the sports director of Universitatea Craiova. From 2004 to 2007 Cămătaru was a member of the Partidul Democrat in Craiova City Council.
