Dudu Georgescu (born September 1, 1950 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player and coach .

Career as a player

Georgescu played from 1962 in the youth team of Progresul Bucharest . In 1969 he joined Progresul's professional team, for which he made his debut in 1970 in Divizia A and in which he played until the end of 1972. After he had spent the 1972/73 season at CSM Reșița , Georgescu moved to Dinamo Bucharest . He spent the most successful period of his career at Dinamo: from 1975 to 1978 he was the top scorer in Divizia A every year , and in 1975 and 1977 he also won the UEFA Golden Shoe as Europe's best scorer . He was the first Romanian to win this award. In addition, he set a record for a European league with 47 goals in the 1976/77 season, which was only outbid by Lionel Messi with 50 goals in one season 25 years later in the 2011/12 season. In 1975, 1977, 1982 and 1983, Georgescu won the Romanian championship with his club. After leaving Dinamo in 1983, Georgescu let his career end with a few smaller clubs. In 1988 he finally ended his career.

Career as a coach

In the 1991/92 season Georgescu was coach of Corvinul Hunedoara in the second half of the season , but could no longer prevent the club's relegation. In the following season he looked after for two games CSM Reșița after the dismissal of Ion Copăceanu, before the club signed Dan Firițeanu. In the meantime, he worked in the sports and culture department of the Romanian Ministry of the Interior. Before 2001 he coached some lower class clubs without any particular success, including Acvila Giurgiu in Divizia C , Dunărea Călărași in Divizia B and the then Soviet second division team Zimbru Chișinău . He later emigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto , where he founded a football school and also worked with players from the Canadian Olympic team. After a few years of residency, Georgescu acquired Canadian citizenship. In May 2004 he returned to Romania, but was unable to gain a foothold there. After temporarily working as a match observer on behalf of the Romanian Football Association in autumn 2004 , he left the country for Canada again at the end of 2005. In December 2007, the fact that he did not even receive an offer from his ex-club Dinamo Bucharest for a possible collaboration in the child and youth sector despite his many years of service led him to the broken relationship with the ruler in the club, his former teammate Cornel Dinu , back.

National team

Georgescu played 44 games in which he scored 21 goals for the Romanian national team . He made his debut on October 14, 1973 in a 9-0 home win against Finland and was regularly appointed to the squad until September 1982. After he had not been considered for the squad for the European Football Championship in 1984 , Georgescu received a last fourteen-minute international match on July 31, 1984 in the friendly against China as a thank you .
