career

societies

At the end of the 1970s (1977/78, 1978/79) and in the 1980s (1984/85, 1985/86, 1987/88) he played Portuguese football five times with FC Porto , where he played as a striker and was a long-time team captain -Master and three times (1976/77, 1983/84, 1987/88) cup winners . On May 16, 1977, the young center forward Fernando Gomes celebrated his first title win in the cup final with a 2-1 win over Sporting Braga. He won the sixth championship title in the green and white jersey of Sporting Lisbon in the 1989/90 round at the Jose Alvalade stadium when Mats Magnusson of Benfica Lisbon was top scorer with 33 goals. In 1983 (36 goals in 29 games) and 1985 (39 goals in 30 games) he was awarded the Golden Shoe for the best European top scorer. He was the top scorer six times in Portugal. The versatile and individually strong scorer was also part of the FC Porto team in the 1986/87 season, which won the national championship against FC Bayern Munich . In the final on May 27, 1987 in Vienna he was not on the pitch, Paulo Futre and Rabah Madjer played by storm. When the blue-whites from the Estadio das Antas were in the final of the cup winners' competition against Juventus Turin on May 16, 1984 in Basel , Gomes and his colleagues lost with 1: 2 goals. Overall, it brought Gomes from 1974 to 1991 in 432 league games on 330 goals.

National team

For the Portuguese national soccer team , in which he also became team captain , he scored 13 goals in 48 games and took part in the 1984 European Soccer Championship in France and the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . He made his debut in the national team of the Federacâo Portuguesa de Futebol on April 30, 1975 in Prague in the 0: 5 defeat of the Red-Greens against the CSSR in the European Championship qualifier. He said goodbye on November 16, 1988 in Porto with a 1-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg. Fernando Gomes was the goalscorer for the 1-0 victory. For the European Championship in 1984 Portugal qualified against the USSR, Poland and Finland. The decisive game took place on November 13, 1983 in Lisbon against the USSR in front of 75,000 spectators. The couple Rui Jordão and Gomes operated in the storm . Jordão scored the winning goal. At the finals in France from June 12 to 27, 1984, the Portuguese played against Germany, Spain and Romania. Portugal survived the group stage together with Spain. In the semifinals on June 23 in Marseille against hosts France, Gomes came on for Diamantino in the 64th minute of the game. The game won the Platini -Elf in extra time with 3-2 goals. Gomes had three appearances at the EM. In qualifying for the 1986 World Cup, Portugal brought the German team their first defeat in a qualification with their 1-0 victory on October 16, 1985 in Stuttgart. In Mexico, Portugal and Fernando Gomes were eliminated from the tournament with 2: 4 points after the group matches against England, Poland and Morocco. But behind the scenes problems were also responsible for the elimination. The reason was the so-called "Saltillo Affaire", in which national players and FPF officials were equally involved. It was, of course, about money. Eleven "ringleaders" were suspended after the elimination (1: 3 against Morocco), whereupon the rest of the World Cup squad announced their withdrawal from the national team out of solidarity and Portugal was suddenly in front of a pile of broken glass.
