Benedict Saul "Benni" McCarthy (born November 12, 1977 in Cape Town ) is a former football player from South Africa and the record scorer for his country's national team .

Career

Benedict McCarthy began his career in 1996 with the Cape Town Spurs . Here he played for a year and went to Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 1997 , where he was on the pitch in a total of 13 games in which he scored twice. After the 2000/01 season he moved to Celta Vigo in the Spanish Primera División for 6 million euros .

He played at Celta Vigo until 2002, then was loaned to FC Porto for a year and came back to Celta Vigo. From the 2003/04 season he played permanently at FC Porto in the Portuguese SuperLiga . With Porto he won the Champions League and the World Cup in 2004 and was also the top scorer in the SuperLiga with 20 goals. For the 2006/2007 season he moved for a transfer fee of around 3.7 million euros to the English first division club Blackburn Rovers , where he made his debut on August 19, 2006 under coach Mark Hughes in the game against Portsmouth FC . In total, he was on the pitch for the Rovers 139 times and scored 51 goals.

In February 2010 McCarthy moved from the Rovers to West Ham United , where he received a contract until June 30, 2011 and where he completed 14 games for the first team, in which he remained without a goal, which is why his contract after this season also was no longer extended.

Therefore, he signed with the Orlando Pirates in the South African first division until June 30, 2013 , where he made his debut in the game against Black Leopards FC on August 12, 2011 when he was substituted on in the 62nd minute and 8 minutes later even to the 2-0 final score for the Pirates met. After his contract expired, he ended his active career.

McCarthy is considered one of the best players in the history of South African football.

McCarthy was on the national team since 1998. For the home World Cup , he was surprisingly removed from the squad by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira .
