Career

societies

Independiente Medellin

Jackson Martínez's professional career began in 2004 with Independiente Medellín . In 2009 he won the second half series ( Finalización ) of the Colombian championship with the club . For the club it was the fifth championship title.

Jaguares de Chiapas

After five years at Independiente, Martínez moved to the first Mexican division in 2009 with the Jaguares de Chiapas . In his first season he scored nine goals. In 2011 he won the Copa Mesoamericana , a tournament between Mexican and Central American teams, with the club . In the final he scored three goals in a 4-1 win against AD Isidro Metapán from El Salvador . With five goals he was the top scorer of the tournament. At the beginning of the Apertura 2012 he was team captain of the Jaguares. He is also the Jaguares' second top scorer with 33 goals.

FC Porto

Martínez moved to the Portuguese champions FC Porto for the 2012/13 season for a transfer fee of 8.8 million euros . He signed a four-year contract valid until 2016 with an exit clause of 40 million euros. In his first competitive game for FC Porto in the Supercup final against Académica de Coimbra , he headed the 1-0 winner in the 90th minute.

In his first season, Martínez was the top scorer with 26 goals this season and won the championship with his club.

Atletico Madrid

For the 2015/16 season, Martínez moved to the Spanish Primera División at Atlético Madrid . He received a four-year contract valid until June 30, 2019.

Guangzhou Evergrande

In early February 2016, he moved to the Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande for a transfer fee of 42 million euros . He received a four-year contract. He scored a goal in his first game, but lost the game against Chongqing Lifan 2-1. His remaining time in China was not very successful, also due to injuries and operations. Only four hits in 16 games were the meager result after two years. For this reason, the decision was made to terminate the contract in March 2018. Instead of dissolving the contract, Martínez was loaned to Portimonense SC in Portugal . There, too, he was only able to complete a limited training program due to a protracted ankle injury in 2015 that had already severely affected him in China.

Portimonense SC

After two loans to the Portuguese first division club , Martínez finally moved to Portimonense SC in 2019 . There he has so far scored 10 goals in 45 appearances.

National team

He made his debut for the Colombian national team on September 5, 2009 in the qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup against Ecuador , in which he also scored his first international goal. At the Copa America 2011 he was part of the Colombian squad, but only completed a short assignment. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was used three times and scored two goals. The Colombians reached the quarter-finals in their first World Cup participation since 1998, which they lost to the hosts.
