The Primeira Divisão 1978/79 was the 45th season of the top Portuguese division in men's football. It began on August 27, 1978 and ended on June 17, 1979.

Defending champions FC Porto became Portuguese champions for the seventh time. Of the four climbers, only SC Beira-Mar managed to stay in the league.
