Barreiro [ bɐˈʁɐiɾu ] is a city ( Cidade ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal . 79,042 people live in the industrial city (as of June 30, 2011).

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Barreiro and Lavradio were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Barreiro e Lavradio . Barreiro is the seat of this newly formed community.

history

Presumably fishermen from the Algarve settled here for the first time . After the Reconquista , the place was re-established by the Order of St. Jacob of the Sword . In addition to fishing, salt production and agriculture were now practiced. In 1521 the place was elevated to a vila . With the arrival of the railroad in 1861 and the industrial operations of the Companhia União Fabril from 1896 , Barreiro saw significant growth. In 1984 the place was raised to a city ( Cidade ).

Culture

With the OUT.FEST, a festival of alternative rock music takes place here regularly. The tenth edition took place from October 8th to 12th, 2013. a. The Fall , Rhodri Davies and Lee Gamble .

Barreiro is the seat of a district of the same name ( concelho ) in the Setúbal district . On June 30, 2011 the district had 7507 inhabitants on an area of ​​36.4 km². The neighboring regions are (starting clockwise in the north): Moita , Palmela , Setúbal , Sesimbra , Seixal and Lisbon (separated by the Tagus Delta ).

With the regional reform in September 2013, several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from eight to four.
