Fernando Albino de Sousa Chalana (born February 10, 1959 in Barreiro ) is a Portuguese football coach and former football player .
Career
He started at the Barreirense football club. At the age of 17 he made his debut with the Lisbon club Benfica Lisbon , where he played from 1975 to 1984. He made his debut for the Portuguese national soccer team on November 17, 1976. The game against the Danish national soccer team was won 1-0. Chalana was then the third youngest player of all time in the Seleção.
The highlight of his career was the 1984 European Football Championship , where he was one of the leading figures in the Seleção. Portugal reached the semi-finals. In the 1984/1985 season he went to Girondins Bordeaux in France . However, he could not prevail there because of several injuries. In 1987/1988 he went back to Benfica Lisbon. In 1988 he played in a friendly against Sweden . At Benfica Lisbon, where he stayed until 1990, he was only a substitute. Then there was a transfer to Belenenses Lisbon . He ended his career in the 1991/1992 season at the age of 33 with the second division club CF Estrela Amadora .
Chalana worked as an assistant trainer at Benfica Lisbon. After José Antonio Camacho resigned on March 9, 2008, Chalana was given responsibility for the first team.
