history
The natural barrier of the Tejo estuary has long prevented the construction of railway lines from the south to Lisbon. That is why all long-distance trains to the south of Portugal ( Algarve , Faro ) started on the southern bank of the Tejo in the old Barreiro station. This station, which opened on October 4, 1884, had a station hall with two tracks and two other tracks outside the hall.
With the commissioning of the railway line over the April 25th Bridge on June 30th 1999 the station lost all long-distance trains.
With the opening of the new Barreiro station, 100 m further east, on December 14, 2008, the old station was shut down. All tracks inside and outside the hall have been dismantled. The building itself is still accessible. However, the structure of the reception building has apparently not been maintained and is left to decay.
