João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo (born May 27, 1994 in Barreiro ) is a Portuguese football player who is under contract with Manchester City .

Career

João Cancelo started playing football at FC Barreirense at the age of eleven . In 2008 he moved to the youth department of Benfica Lisbon and in 2014 moved up from the second team to the first. He made his debut on May 10, 2014 (30th matchday) for Benfica Lisbon in the Primeira Liga when they lost 2-1 in the away game against FC Porto .

On August 20, 2014, he moved to the Spanish Primera División for Valencia CF on loan until the end of the 2014/15 season . After ten point games, he was permanently signed up and given a contract valid until June 30, 2021. After only playing sporadically in his first year in Valencia, he was able to fight for a regular place as a right full- back at the beginning of the 2015/16 season . In his first Champions League game on September 16, 2015, he was able to score his first goal in this competition directly in a 2-3 defeat for Valencia.

On August 22, 2017, he moved to the Italian Serie A at Inter Milan on loan until the end of the 2017/18 season . At Inter, he appeared 26 times in Serie A and scored one goal.

For the 2018/19 season he did not return to Valencia, but moved within the league for a transfer fee of 40.4 million euros to reigning champions Juventus Turin , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2023 .

At the beginning of August 2019, Cancelo moved to the Premier League for Manchester City for 65 million euros ; in return, Danilo moved to Juventus for 37 million euros. Cancelo signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2025.

National team

In 2010 he became a national player for the first time when he was appointed to the U16 national team, for which he played six internationals . After playing for the U17 and U18 age groups, he was used in all four group games during the U19 European Championship in 2013 . From 2015 to 2017 he played eleven international matches for the U21 national team . In his debut for the senior national team on September 1, 2016 in a 5-0 win in the friendly against the Gibraltar national team , he scored his first goal with the goal to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute.
