Nicolás Hernán Otamendi (born February 12, 1988 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine football player who is primarily used in defense.
Career
In the club
His hometown club since his youth is CA Vélez Sársfield . On May 10, 2008 Otamendi made his professional debut in the Clausura , but was only a supplementary player in the further course of the season. In 2009 he became a regular player, made his debut at international club level in the Copa Sudamericana and won the Clausura title with Vélez. In the Apertura 2009 Otamendi scored his first professional goal in a 3-1 win against Arsenal de Sarandí . The Uruguayan newspaper "El País" then selected the central defender for the South America selection. At the end of August 2010 Otamendi was signed for a transfer of € 4 million from the Portuguese top club FC Porto for five seasons, Vélez Sársfield kept 50% of the transfer rights. In his first season he won the Portuguese championship, the cup and the UEFA Europa League with FC Porto .
In February 2014 Otamendi joined the Primera División for FC Valencia . He signed a contract until June 30, 2019 and was loaned to Atlético Mineiro until the end of the season. For the 2014/15 season Otamendi joined the Valencia CF team. After only one season in La Liga , Otamendi joined the English first division club Manchester City .
In the national team
In the Argentine national team , he made his debut in the friendly against Panama (3-1) on May 20, 2009, although he was only 21 years old and had only played eleven professional games.
Also for the World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Ecuador Otamendi was called up by national coach Diego Maradona and was even in the starting XI against Ecuador in the high altitude of Quito, where Argentina lost 2-0. After another defeat against Brazil, in which Otamendi played in central defense, coach Diego Maradona put him in the unfamiliar position of right defender in the decisive qualifier against Uruguay . In the hotly contested game he was ultimately one of the key players for the 1-0 victory. On May 19, 2010 Otamendi was appointed to the Argentine squad for the 2010 World Cup as one of the few players who earned their own money in Argentina . In the last group game against Greece and in the last sixteen and quarter-finals against Mexico and Germany , he played from the start.
He was in the current squad of the Argentina national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
