EFL Cup 2017/18

The EFL Cup 2018/19 (alternatively after the sponsor Carabao Cup ) was the 59th edition of the tournament . All 92 clubs of the four top English leagues in 2018/19 took part in the competition.

The competition started on August 14, 2018 with the first round.

mode

In contrast to the previous year, the English Football League announced some changes. Extra time was abolished, and if there was a tie after the regular game including stoppage time, the game was decided on penalties, with the exception of the final. In addition, the groups ( Northern / Southern Section ) were abolished, but attention was still paid to regional proximity of the respective counterparties. The video assistant was also used for the first time in the cup , but only when a player from the Premier League is playing in a stadium .

First round

The draw for the first round took place in Vietnam this year . 70 clubs took part in the first round. 13 clubs of the Premier League 2018/19 entered the competition together with the championship clubs Stoke City and Swansea City in the second round. It was only in the third round to come because of its international holdings of Arsenal FC , the FC Burnley , the Chelsea , the Liverpool , Manchester City , Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur added.

The matches were held between August 14 and 16, 2018.
