The League Cup 1960/61 was the first edition of the English League Cup .

The competition started on September 26, 1960 with the first round. The winner was determined by a final with a round trip. These two games took place on August 22 and September 5, 1961 between Rotherham United and Aston Villa . Aston Villa won the title 3-2 on aggregate, despite losing 2-0 in the first leg at Rotherham. At home in Villa Park , Aston Villa was able to equalize in the overall result in regular time. Peter McParland scored the winning goal for Villa in the 109th minute. This made The Villans the first winners of the English League Cup .

mode

The participating teams of the Premier League and the Football League were qualified for this year's edition of the League Cups , with Arsenal FC , Sheffield Wednesday , Tottenham Hotspur , West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers not participating. The matches up to the quarter-finals were played in one game. If it was tied after 90 minutes, two extra times of 15 minutes followed. If no winner could be determined after that, there was a second leg with the opposing team. From the semi-finals onwards, the tournament was played with a return leg. If there was a tie after both games, there was a play-off.

aThe game was originally supposed to take place on October 26, 1960, but due to heavy rain the Torquay United place was unplayable, the game was postponed to November 2, 1960 and played in Plymouth's Home Park. Technically, however, this was still a home game for Torquay, so the second leg was played according to the rules in Plymouth.
