The League Cup 1982/83 was the 23rd edition of the English League Cup , which had existed since 1960 .

The competition started on August 30, 1982 with the first round and ended on March 26, 1983 with the final at Wembley . The title went to defending champions Liverpool FC , who defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the final after extra time. Liverpool won the English League Cup for the third time in a row after 1981 and 1982 . Manchester United made it to the final of this competition for the first time and won the FA Cup in 1982/83 two months later . After United's early lead by 17-year-old Norman Whiteside , Alan Kennedy equalized for Liverpool in the 75th minute. Ronnie Whelan scored the winning goal in the eighth minute of extra time and thus ensured the last cup success for coaching legend Bob Paisley .
