Frank Anthony Stapleton (born July 10, 1956 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player .
life and career
Stapleton began his career at Arsenal . Before that, the Irishman tried his hand at Manchester United , which Stapleton "deported" to London . In 1972 he came to the English. He made his debut in 1975 against Stoke City . With Arsenal FC he won the English Cup in 1979, which was his only title with the Gunners. Two years later he moved to Manchester United for £ 900,000. The striker won the English Cup two more times with ManU. After these successes, he moved to Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 1987 . After only a year he returned to England and played for Derby County and Blackburn Rovers . After another three years as a player- coach at Bradford City , he ended his active career and became a coach at New England Revolution in the USA . In the 2003/2004 season he was a short-term special coach for the Bolton Wanderers ' striker . Internationally, he played 71 times for the Irish national football team and scored 20 goals. He made his debut for the Greens in 1976 against Turkey . With the Irish he took part in the 1988 European Football Championship in Germany . With the team, Stapleton was eliminated in the group stage. He played all the games and was instrumental in the historic win against England . He also took part in the 1990 World Cup in Italy , where he was able to advance to the quarter-finals with Ireland, but was eliminated there against host Italy . Stapleton was not used in any game.
