Ronald 'Ronnie' Andrew Whelan (born September 25, 1961 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player .

Whelan joined Liverpool from Ireland in 1979 as a young player . He made his Premier League debut in 1981 and became a regular in left midfield for the 1980s team when Ray Kennedy retired . With Liverpool FC he won the European Cup in 1984 . He was at the 1985 European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus involved than in the Heysel Stadium from Brussels to Heysel Stadium disaster was coming.

With the Irish national team he took part in the European Football Championship in Germany in 1988 . In total, he played 53 international matches in which he scored 3 goals.

At Liverpool FC he ended his active career in 1994.
