The EFL Cup 2016/17 was the 57th edition of the tournament . The tournament started with 92 clubs. This year the competition had no sponsor and was named English Football League Cup , or EFL Cup for short .

The competition began on August 8, 2016 with the first round and ended with the final at Wembley Stadium in London on February 26, 2017.

First round

The draw for the first round took place on June 22, 2016. Newcastle United and Norwich City were the only teams from the English Football League that only entered the tournament in the second round, as they were the two best-ranked teams last season. The other 70 teams in the English Football League competed in the first round. The matches were held between August 9th and 11th, 2016.
