The 2008/09 League Cup was the 49th edition of The Carling Cup , or League Cup . The tournament started with 92 clubs.

The competition started on August 11, 2008 with the first round and ended with the final in the new Wembley Stadium in London on March 1, 2009. The winner of the competition was Manchester United .

The draw for the first round took place on June 13, 2008. All 72 teams in the Football League competed in the first round.
