David Michael Bentley (born August 27, 1984 in Peterborough ) is a former English football player .

The versatile midfield player, who mostly acts as a winger , began his career at Arsenal . There, however, he was rarely used in the professional team and moved permanently to the last-named club after two loan periods at Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers in January. He had his breakthrough at the Rovers and after regular appearances for the U-21 team, he was appointed to the English senior team for the first time in May 2007 before a European Championship qualifier .

Athletic career

Arsenal FC

Bentley began his career at Arsenal as a striker , occasionally taking on the role of the somewhat lagging attacking player. In the further course of his time at Arsenal, he became more and more of a midfielder and mostly occupied the outer positions. He received an offer from Arsenal head coach Arsène Wenger at the age of only 16 to train with the professional team and played for the A-team for the first time in January 2003 when he beat a third-round FA Cup in a 2-0 win Oxford United came on in the 77th minute for Kolo Touré . In the 4-1 victory in the League Cup against Middlesbrough FC , he scored his first goal with a spectacular lift in January 2004, which earned him well-meaning comparisons with the former top player Dennis Bergkamp from the critics .

Nevertheless, the Arsenal club management loaned him to league rivals Norwich City for the entire 2004/05 season . There Bentley came to a total of 26 championship games and two goals. After he had to pause due to an injury from January 2005, he returned in April 2005 as a substitute and was instrumental in the 2-0 win against Manchester United . Despite being in good shape, the club was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season and Bentley returned to Arsenal in summer 2005. There he asked for approval for a change in order to have better chances of a regular place in a team in the future. In retrospect, Bentley said he had "personal problems" with the footballing perspective at Arsenal at this point in his career, which continued into the subsequent 2005/06 season when he was loaned to Blackburn Rovers .

Blackburn Rovers

After the end of the one-year loan period with the "Canaries", Bentley was associated with several clubs, including the Wolverhampton Wanderers in particular . Instead, he was loaned to the Blackburn Rovers in August 2005 - as already mentioned, with an early decision to switch to the Rovers in January 2006. In his first game after this transfer, he scored his club in the Premier League with three goals to a 4-3 win against Manchester United, making him the first player in the history of the Premier League to do so against this club. Later, Bentley was a regular in the team that finished sixth in the championship and thus ensured qualification for the UEFA Cup .

In the 2006/07 season , Bentley was a regular goal scorer in the Premier League, scored a goal against Red Bull Salzburg from over 20 meters in the UEFA Cup and entered the group stage of this competition with the Rovers. There he again scored the decisive goal for the 2-1 win at Wisła Krakow in the last minute. Because of this good form Bentley has been associated with a move to a top club - especially Manchester United - but Bentley decided on February 27, 2007 instead to extend his contract with the Rovers until 2011. Rovers coach Mark Hughes described After signing the new contract, Bentley was “a great talent with a great future”, and club chairman John Williams also emphasized that Bentley was “seen as one of the best young football players in the country”. Bentley ended the season with seven goals, but his 13 assists in particular emphasized his increasing importance as a team player. This also earned him the choice of the club's best player of the year among the Rovers supporters.

Tottenham Hotspur

On July 31, 2008 Bentley was signed by the London club Tottenham Hotspur. He signed a six-year contract. The transfer fee was £ 15 million plus a performance-related bonus of £ 2 million. On August 16, 2008 he played for the "Spurs" at Middlesbrough FC (1: 2) his first competitive game and the premier goal followed a month later in the UEFA Cup against Wisła Krakow . Over time, it was used less often and after the end of the 2008/09 season, rumors of a possible move to Aston Villa increased , but they turned out to be unfounded.

Birmingham City

During the winter break of the 2010/2011 season, Bentley was loaned to Birmingham City for the remainder of the season . He played his first game on January 16 in a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa over the entire season.

West Ham United

On August 31, 2011, Tottenham Hotspur announced that Bentley would be loaned to West Ham United for the 2011/12 season. During the winter break, he returned to his home club early after five missions.

FK Rostov

On September 6, 2012 Bentley was loaned to the Russian first division club FK Rostow until the end of the year .

English national team

Bentley played in both the English U-15 and U-16 national teams. He even led the U-18 national team as captain and he later became a U-21 national player, where he played eight times and scored four goals. He was the first Englishman to score a goal at the new Wembley Stadium on March 24, 2007 in the game against Italy's U-21s .

When Bentley started on May 25, 2007 after a good season for the Blackburn Rovers in a game of England's B-selection against Albania , Steve McClaren compared his potential with that of a David Beckham . In this game Bentley prepared the first goal for Stewart Downing with a cross and after he was also involved in Downing's second goal to England's 3-1 win, he subsequently received the honor of "Man of the Match". On the following day, McClaren nominated him for the 26-man squad of the senior national team for the friendly against Brazil . However, his career received a slight setback in the run-up to the U-21 European Championship in the Netherlands , to which he was appointed by Stuart Pearce . Bentley withdrew its participation due to the great stress of the past season, to which Pearce responded with allegations in which he questioned Bentley's willingness to work. This controversy over Bentley's withdrawal ultimately ensured that McClaren did not consider him for the senior team's friendly against Germany .

He made his senior national team debut in the European Championship qualifier against Israel on September 8, 2007, when he came on for Shaun Wright-Phillips a few minutes before the end of the game .

End of career

After the 2013-14 season, Bentley announced his retirement at the age of just 29.
