Darron Thomas Daniel Gibson (born October 25, 1987 in Derry ) is an Irish football player who plays predominantly in midfield . Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, Gibson sparked a dispute between the Football Association of Ireland and the Irish Football Association after choosing to play for Ireland rather than his native Northern Ireland. The case went so far that FIFA had to decide on it.

Career

societies

From his youth club Institute FC Gibson moved to Manchester United in 2004, Gibson made his debut for Manchester in the League Cup against Barnet on October 26, 2005 when he was substituted on for Lee Martin . During the 2005-06 season, Gibson played regularly for the Manchester United reserve team. In May 2006 Gibson was honored with the Jimmy Murphy Award for the team's best youth player of the season. He was then allowed to play in some first team friendly matches. 2006/07 he did not spend the season at Manchester United, but with his teammates Dong Fangzhuo , Jonny Evans , Fraizer Campbell and Danny Simpson at Royal Antwerp , to whom he was loaned for a year. He was loaned again for the 2007/08 season, this time to Wolverhampton Wanderers .

On November 15, 2008 Gibson made his debut for United in the Premier League . After his substitution there against Stoke City , he also made his debut ten days later in the Champions League against Villarreal when Darren Fletcher was substituted for him. In December 2008 he was part of the squad that won the Club World Cup in Japan - although he was not used there, he received a winners medal. On March 1, 2009, he acted alongside Paul Scholes in the central midfield of the United team that won the League Cup at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur . Here Gibson had stood in the initially goalless first 90 minutes before Ryan Giggs came on for him. After this development spurt in the 2008/09 season, Manchester United equipped him with a new three-year contract. In January 2012, Gibson, who was rarely used in the league, moved to Everton FC. After he made 34 league appearances at Everton in the first two seasons, there were only 17 league games in the following three.

At the end of January 2017, Gibson, as well as his Everton teammate Bryan Oviedo , was brought on by his former Everton coach David Moyes to the relegation-threatened league competitor AFC Sunderland . Gibson came in the rest of the season to 12 missions, but the club rose from bottom of the table in the Football League Championship . There Gibson played a further 15 league games in the following months before he was out due to injury since the turn of the year. In mid-March 2018, Gibson was initially suspended after driving a car while drunk and damaging several vehicles near the training site. At the end of March 2018, the players and the club mutually agreed to terminate the contract.

National team

Internationally, Gibson was active for the Irish national football team , having previously played through the U-17, U-19 and U-21. Before he was 16, Gibson had played for various youth selections for the Northern Irish national team. He made his international debut on August 22, 2007 when he came on as a substitute in a 4-0 friendly against Denmark in the second half . He scored his only international goal to date on February 8, 2011 for a 1-0 lead in the 3-0 Carling Nations Cup 2011 against Wales . It was also nominated for the EM 2012 , but was not used there. Although he was last used in an international match on November 14, 2014, he was called up by national coach Martin O'Neill on May 12, 2016 in the provisional 35-player squad for the 2016 European Championship . He was then used in two test matches before the final squad nomination, but ultimately not considered for the European Championship finals.
