His younger brother, Corry Evans , is also a soccer player and plays for the Blackburn Rovers .

Career

In the club

Jonny Evans started his career at FC Greenisland, where he was discovered by Manchester United scouts. At Manchester he went through all youth teams and was used in various smaller tournaments during the summer break of 2006. Manchester eventually decided to loan Evans to Royal Antwerp for a year alongside Darron Gibson , Danny Simpson and Fraizer Campbell .

This was followed by a year at Sunderland , where he was voted “Young Player of the Year” and then returned to Manchester for the 2007 summer break. On September 26, 2007 Evans made his debut for Manchester United against Coventry City in the English Cup (final score: 2-0). In the UEFA Champions League , Evans made his debut on November 7, 2007 in the home game against Dynamo Kiev when he replaced Gerard Piqué for the final minutes . In the starting line-up Evans was only on December 12, 2007 against AS Roma . He also played two games in the UEFA Champions League. In January 2008 he was loaned to Sunderland again to gain more experience. After 15 games, he returned to Manchester United for the 2008/09 season . He was used in 17 games and was champions and league cup winners with Manchester at the end of the season. In the final of the FIFA Club World Cup 2008 , which Manu won 1-0 against LDU Quito , he came on in the 51st minute for the Argentine international Carlos Tévez .

In the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League , he came to three operations, two in the group stage and in the second round against AC Milan . In the quarter-finals, in which Manchester was eliminated by the German runner-up FC Bayern Munich due to the away goals rule , he only sat on the bench. In the Premier League 2009/10 , Manchester had to give way to Chelsea , but were qualified as runners-up for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League . Here he was used in the two group games against Glasgow Rangers and in the 4-1 semi-final second leg against German runner-up FC Schalke 04 . In the final, which Manchester lost 3-1 to FC Barcelona at Wembley Stadium , he was not in the squad. In the league that Manchester finished as champions, he came to 13 inserts. In the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League , things did not go well for Manchester: in the group stage, in which Evans made four appearances, only two games were won against first-time Romanian champions Oțelul Galați . As a third party in the group, Manchester could continue to play in the round of 32 of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League and prevailed there against Ajax Amsterdam . In the round of 16, both games were lost against Athletic Bilbao . Evans was used in the four games. In the 2011/12 Premier League you had to give way to city rivals Manchester City , who were champions for the first time since 1968. As runners-up, Manchester were once again qualified for the group stage of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League . In contrast to their city rivals, who were eliminated as the group bottom, United became group winners and Evans was used in four of the six group games. In the round of 16 against Real Madrid in the first leg in Madrid with a 1: 1, a good basis was laid, by a 1: 2 in the second leg in their own stadium, where Evans only sat on the bench and the former Manchester player Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal, but retired from Manchester. The Premier League season 2012/13 ended United again in front of the "Citizens". In the group stage of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League , Evans played one game each against three group opponents Bayer 04 Leverkusen , Schachtar Donezk and Real Sociedad . As the group winner, Manu reached the knockout phase, in which Evans was not used and Manu failed in the quarter-finals at the German champions Bayern Munich. In the Premier League , Manchester finished seventh in the first season after long-time coach Alex Ferguson resigned , thereby missing out on European competitions. Instead, the master became the local rival again. The 2014/15 season closed Manu then in fourth place, and was thus for the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League qualifying. Evans was no longer used there.

On August 30, 2015, Evans moved to West Bromwich Albion . He quickly established himself as a regular player, at first he was only used in central defense, later also more and more often on the left side of defense. He finished the 2015/16 season with the "Baggies" in fourteenth place and had 30 appearances, almost as many as in his last two seasons for Manu combined. In the 2016/17 season Evans came on 31 missions, the season ended Albion in 10th place. At the end of the 2017/18 season Evans was relegated with West Bromwich Albion bottom of the table.

For the 2018/19 season, Evans moved to Leicester City , who activated a release clause in their contract that came into effect after Evans was relegated with West Bromwich Albion in the preseason.

In the national team

In the summer of 2006 he took part with the U-21s in the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2007 and played four minutes against the 86th minute substitute Mario Gómez in the game against Germany . Since the Northern Irish had not only lost the home game against Germany, but also the away game against Romania , they were eliminated after only two games.

His debut for the Northern Irish national team gave Evans five days after the game against Germany on September 6, 2006 in the 3-2 win over eventual European champions Spain in the European Championship qualification, where he was used directly for 90 minutes. He was then used regularly in the team's competitive games in European and World Cup qualifications. However, it was not set automatically and kept suspending one or more games. So he came to eight missions in the next 11 games, each over 90 minutes. On February 6, 2008, he was then substituted for the first time in the second half in the 1-0 defeat in the friendly against Bulgaria , after he had made a decisive own goal in the 38th minute . His only goal so far for Northern Ireland was on March 28th, 2009 in a 3-2 win over Poland in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, making it 2-1. Overall, he came to seven appearances in the World Cup qualifying, in which he also received three yellow cards and with Northern Ireland in fourth, missed the World Cup.

On August 11, 2010, he was in the 0-2 in the friendly against Montenegro for the first time together with his younger brother Corry in an international match after he was substituted on for his fifth international match in the second half. In Corry's four games earlier, Jonny was not on the team. In total, they have played 19 games together for Northern Ireland so far, most recently on June 16, 2016.

In the qualification for Euro 2012 that followed their first international match , they played four games together, but Jonny played two more qualifying games. For the Northern Irish, however, the qualification was again unsuccessful. In the equally unsuccessful qualification for the 2014 World Cup , they made three joint appearances.

In qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France, in which he played three times with his brother, he missed the first games due to an injury, after 4 appearances he was not placed in the last two group games, whereas Corry at least the penultimate one Game. After Northern Ireland qualified for a European Championship for the first time, both brothers were added to the squad . In the first game against Poland , only Jonny was on the starting line-up. It was his 50th international match. Against Ukraine , both were part of the first team. In stoppage time there was confusion as to which of the two should be substituted. After Corry was finally substituted in the third minute of stoppage time, Jonny received a yellow card a minute later due to a delay in the game . Two minutes later, Niall McGinn then scored the 2-0 goal and thus the final decision for the Northern Irish, who won their first European Championship final game. The one victory was enough to reach the last sixteen, where they were eliminated by Wales. Jonny Evans was one of the players who played all four games for full playing time.

Others

Evans caused a stir on December 18, 2007 when he was taken away by police after a private party with Manchester players after a 26-year-old woman alleged she was raped by Evans. However, due to a lack of evidence, the investigation was terminated on March 14, 2008.
