Daniel Amartey (born December 21, 1994 in Osu ) is a Ghanaian football player who is used as a defender and midfielder . He has been playing for Leicester City in the English Premier League since January 2016 and won the English championship for the first time with the club in the 2015/16 season . With the senior national team of his home country, Amartey became vice-African champion in 2015 .

Club career

Career start at home and jump to Europe

Amartey was born on December 21, 1994 as the son of a taxi driver in the Osu district of the Ghanaian capital Accra and began his football career with the local club Zenaps FC from Teshie , a few kilometers east of Accra. The club belonged to his uncle Francis Amartey, who also appeared as the club's manager and coach. Subsequently, from 2009 he worked for Accra Youth FC , the youth department of the then Ghanaian second division club Inter Allies FC . There he was initially trained for midfield positions and was given a nickname related to world footballer Zinédine Zidane due to his passing quality and ball control . After he had to switch to the defensive row due to an injury-related loss of a teammate in an encounter, Daniel Amartey, who is known for his versatility, also convinced in this position and was used in this position several times before he was promoted to the core force in central defense. After two years in the offspring, after rapid development under the technical director Willie Klutse , he was also used for the first time in the men's team of the club in 2011, where he was also discovered by Magnus Pehrsson , who was currently on a scouting trip through Africa, at the age of 16 has been.

After Pehrsson had become the coach of Djurgårdens IF Fotbollsförening in May 2011, replacing the previous coach Lennart Wass , he secured the transfer rights to Amartey until Amartey celebrated his 18th birthday. While his team-mate Imoro Adams moved to Sweden on loan, Amartey was still too young to change at the time, which is why the club secured the right of first refusal. Even before that, he was introduced to Djurgårdens IF for shorter periods of time from 2011, where he was used several times in 2011 and 2012 for the youngsters and the U-21 team of the Swedes, although he himself is still the Inter Allies, who only participated in the Ghanaian Premier League in 2013/14 , belonged to. It wasn't until about a month after his 18th birthday that Amartey made the leap to Europe, where he was offered a professional contract with the Swedes. He then made his competitive debut on March 3, 2013 in a game of the Swedish Football Cup 2012/13 against Umeå FC in the group stage.

Cup finalist in Sweden

The Ghanaian made his league debut in Fotbollsallsvenskan on March 31, 2013 in the first round match against Helsingborgs IF , when he played the full 90 minutes in defensive midfield in the 3-0 defeat. In his third league appearance, a 4-0 defeat against BK Häcken , Amartey played through, but suffered a cheekbone fracture in the game , and a further examination revealed that he had also suffered another fracture. He then had to decide whether to have surgery or play with a face mask; the Ghanaian opted for the latter and the mask became his new identity with local fans. Normally he should only have worn the mask for a month, but decided to continue wearing the mask due to its popularity. During his time in Sweden he was nicknamed The Mask . Various international scouts became aware of Daniel Amartey's performance in the league; he was closely watched by the German clubs FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern , among others . After having to pause two games due to his fracture, he made his first appearance on April 27 against Syrianska FC . Interim coaching duo Martin Sundgren and Anders Johansson had meanwhile taken over the position of coach after Pehrsson was only able to take one point from the first five rounds. Under the duo Sundgren-Johansson he completed two of the three league games under his leadership, where he had to pause in the one encounter in which he was not used due to a leg injury. With the interim coach, after seven championship games without a win in the 2013 game year, they also achieved their first victory.

Subsequently, the coaching duo was replaced by Per-Mathias Högmo , who initially continued to use Amartey in defensive midfield, but moved him back in September 2013 and henceforth used him as a regular in central defense. By the end of the season, when Djurgårdens IF was in the comfortable seventh place in the table, the Ghanaian defensive man had made 23 of 30 possible league appearances, and he also succeeded in assisting. Finally, the 18-year-old was voted tenth best player in the league by the newspaper Expressen and the eighteenth best player in the league by the newspaper Aftonbladet . Working as a regular until the cup quarter-finals, he could not play the semi-finals against Örgryte IS due to his leg injury, but was back in the final against IFK Göteborg . After an early Gothenburg goal by Tobias Hysén in the sixth minute, Amartey scored the interim 1: 1 equalizer in the 52nd minute and made it with the team through extra time to the penalty shoot-out, where Djurgårdens IF, however, with 1: 3 failed at the Gothenburg. This was also his first and only competitive goal for Djurgårdens IF. Following the Swedish championship, he was in talks with Liverpool FC, among others, about a possible move to the English Premier League . A transfer to England then did not take place.

Change to Denmark

Amartey started the 2014 game year under Per Olsson and was a regular player in central defense in eleven of the twelve league games to date until the end of May. He also came to two cup games in 2013/14 when Djurgårdens IF was eliminated in the group stage. During this time, he was courted by various clubs, including FC Red Bull Salzburg , RB Leipzig and FC Copenhagen . On July 1, 2014, Amartey's move to FC Copenhagen, where the Ghanaian had previously completed positive trial training units, came into force. According to various reports, the Danes are said to have paid between 1.8 and 2.5 million euros for the "exceptional African defender". He started the new season with the Copenhagen team on July 20, 2014 and made his competitive debut under Ståle Solbakken in a 0-0 draw against Silkeborg IF . Solbakken also used him most of the time as a regular player for the full length of the game. Under the former Norwegian international , he also took part with FC Copenhagen in the third qualifying round for the Champions League 2014/15 , where they defeated team Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk with a total score of 2-0 from the return leg and only in the subsequent Play- offs against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Until then, Amartey had been used in three of his team's four games and also scored a goal in the 2-3 first leg defeat against Leverkusen. As the losing team in the play-offs, FC Copenhagen was allowed to take part in the 2014/15 Europa League group stage . The regular force was used in all six games in the group stage from September to December 2014 and contributed two more hits. With the team, however, he was eliminated from the current tournament as the last of Group B.

In the league it went very well for the team around the Ghanaian defensive player; with four points behind FC Midtjylland , FC Copenhagen became Danish runners-up in early June 2015. Daniel Amartey was used in 29 of the 33 league games, scored three goals and presented another for his teammates. This season he was used almost without exception in defensive midfield and only rarely spent games in the well-staffed defensive line, which allowed only 22 hits over the entire season, the fewest goals conceded in the league. In the Danish Football Cup 2014/15 it went for FC Copenhagen after the presentation, with the lion penetrated to the finals, where the Vikings of FC Vestsjælland defeated on penalties. The defensive player in the meantime as a Ghanaian national team player was used in all games of FC Copenhagen, except for the first game when he was on the substitute bench, and contributed a template in the final. Subsequently, the Ghanaian, who became runner-up and cup winners with the club, continued to be courted by various major European clubs. However, there was no change of club during the 2015 summer break.

Start of the season with FC Copenhagen and move to England

After he was associated with the Champions League qualifying competitor Bayer Leverkusen and other top European clubs such as AS Roma , AS Monaco , Galatasaray Istanbul , Juventus Turin or VfL Wolfsburg in the summer , he started normally with the Danes 2015/16 season . He was used in three of the four Europa League qualifying matches of his team, where he also contributed a goal assist in the third round second leg against FK Jablonec . With the team he was only eliminated due to the away goals rule against the Czech football club. The defensive player, who can also be used in the central midfield and as a right winger, also played two games in the Danish Football Cup 2015/16 and was used in 15 of the 18 previous championship games until the beginning of December 2015. In the beginning, Solbakken mostly continued to use him in defensive midfield, but increasingly shifted his role to the defensive line from September, where he appeared as a central defender until the beginning of November, before he was more often back as a defensive midfielder.

He then completed a trial training session at Leicester City during the winter break and switched to the English first division club on January 23, 2016 for a rumored transfer fee of £ five million (around 6.3 million euros) , which was currently on the masterclass. He signed a contract with a term of four and a half years until the summer of 2020. Here, among other things, he met his compatriot Jeffrey Schlupp , who was almost two years older to the day and with whom he had played several times in the Ghanaian national team. In order to collect match practice for the professionals, Daniel Amartey was initially used in the U-21 team, the reserve team. He made his debut on February 8, 2016 in a 1-0 defeat against the U-21s of Reading FC , with reserve coach Steve Beaglehole already using him for the full 90 minutes. After another outing against the Manchester City reserve team on February 15, Amartey made his league debut with the professionals on February 27 when he was right-back on the pitch for 78 minutes in a 1-0 win over Norwich City . Before he moved to England, other clubs, especially from Germany, showed interest in the Ghanaian; first and foremost FC Schalke 04 , but also VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Köln . However, Leicester City's £ 5m offer was decisive for a transfer to the island. Before that, there were reports that the transfer fee was 60 million Danish kroner (over 7.5 million euros), but this turned out to be wrong. After his first division debut, the Ghanaian was in the squad in all league games of his team up to the 36th round, but spent most of the time unused on the bench, but also made four other short appearances in the league. Two rounds before the end of the season, Leicester City was then the English champions 2015/16 . Up to this point he had made two more appearances in the U-21 squad.

Amartey gained his first experience in a Ghanaian football team at the end of March 2012 when he was called up for the first time in the U-20 team in his home country . In May 2012, another call -up followed for a U-20 tournament in South Africa , whereupon he was also used for the first time. He made his debut on May 25, 2012 under the controversial Orlando Wellington in a 3-2 victory over his colleagues from Nigeria . The future U-20 coach Sellas Tetteh also nominated Amartey for the 21-man squad that took part in the U-20 World Cup in Turkey . Due to discrepancies between the Ghanaian association and its now regular club Djurgårdens IF , the young Ghanaian was unable to take part in the World Cup, as it overlapped with the league operations of Fotbollsallsvenskan 2013 .

After the Ghanaian Football Association had already made several preparations before that, Daniel Amartey made his senior national team debut on January 19, 2015 when he took part in the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea under Avram Grant . He made his debut in the first group game, a 1: 2 defeat against Senegal , when he was used in central defense for the full 90 minutes . After this encounter he was awarded the Fair Play Award . After that, he was also in the next two group games against Algeria and South Africa used, but it was after he acted out against Algeria nor the full 90 minutes against South Africa only 36 minutes on the turf before he injured by John Boye was replaced . He subsequently recovered, but then sat in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, as well as in the final final, on the substitutes' bench without any use. The Ghanaians only lost the final against Ivory Coast on penalties 8: 9.

Subsequently, at the end of March 2015, he was called up for two friendly international appearances against Senegal and Mali and was used in both games. In June and September 2015 he appeared under Avram Grant in the first two group matches of the qualifying for the 2017 African Cup of Nations. After he made a short appearance in the 7-1 victory over Mauritius , he was in the game against Rwanda , a 1-0 success, in the full game in the central defense. In the friendly against Canada in mid-October, the Israeli team boss of Ghana brought him into the squad a month later for the two qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup . He sat on the bench in the 0-0 first leg in the second round against the Comoros and was substituted for Jonathan Mensah four days later in the 2-0 second leg win from the 26th minute . In the two subsequent qualifying games for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations against Mozambique in March 2016, Amartey sat on the bench both times without a job.
