The FK Dnipro ( Ukrainian ФК Дніпро ; UEFA transcription FC Dnipro ; Russian ФК Днепр , FK Dnepr ) was a Ukrainian football club from the city of Dnipro . Since the name of the city was Dnipropetrovsk until 2016, the association was known as Dnipro Dnipropetrowsk in German-speaking countries .
At the time of the Soviet Union , Dnipro was one of the most successful teams in the Ukrainian SSR alongside Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk and was able to win the cup once and the championship of the USSR twice in the 1980s .
history
Soviet Union
The club was founded in 1918 as a work team of the Petrowski steelworks, in 1936 the team took part for the first time in a sub-class USSR-wide league under the name Stal (= steel), in 1946 the team was renamed Metalurg and kept this name until 1961 when they was handed over to the Jugmasch works and was given this name. In 1968/69 the team was given up again, it was named Dnepr after the brand name of a Ukrainian motorcycle and a young, new coach Valerij Lobanowskyj , who gained his first experience at Dnepr before he became one of the most successful coaches in the world at Dynamo Kiev after 1974 has been. 1971 Dnepr succeeded the first promotion to the highest Soviet league . Since then, the club has remained first class , with the exception of a two-year second division game 1978–1980. After the second promotion, Dnepr developed into one of the best teams in the USSR in the 1980s, and they played regularly for the championship. The team at that time succeeded in winning the Soviet championship in 1983 and 1988, and in 1988 they also celebrated the Soviet Cup victory. 1987 and 1989 Dnepr was runner-up.
The Dnepr team at that time included stars such as Oleh Protasov , Hennadij Lytowchenko and Volodymyr Lyutyj . Numerous talents came from their own youth.
Dnepr was five times the best football club in the Republic of Ukraine . In terms of the number of titles, the club was actually the second most successful Ukrainian club after Dynamo Kiev . During the existence of the Soviet Union, the club was mainly known by the Russian name, Dnepr Dnepropetrovsk (also spelled Dnieper Dnepropetrovsk ). According to the all-time Soviet league table , Dnieper ranks fourth among all Ukrainian teams that have ever competed in the Soviet league, and 17th overall.
Ukraine
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the club now played in the newly founded Ukrainian first division . Since then, the Ukrainian name of the club, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk , has been used internationally and on club symbols, including FIFA and UEFA .
After Ukraine gained independence, Dnipro could no longer win a title, but reached the cup final three times and ended up in the top three of the Ukrainian championship six times. Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk is one of the four teams, along with Dynamo Kiev , Shakhtar Donetsk and Tavrija Simferopol , who have never been relegated from the Premjer-Liha . The main sponsor of the association has been the private group , an influential group of companies based in Dnipro , for many years . The club's best-known players are Andrij Russol , who scored Ukraine's first goal at a soccer World Cup, and the Ukrainian Soccer Player of the Year Oleh Wenhlinskyj (2003) and Yevhen Konopljanka (2010 and 2012).
Dnipro had taken part in European competitions several times, including twice in the European Cup ( 1985 , 1990 ); the club reached the quarter-finals. In the UEFA Europa League 2011/12 Dnipro failed in the play-off round against English representatives FC Fulham . Things went better for the Ukrainian representative in the 2012/13 Europa League season . There the team not only reached the group stage, but also won the group with five wins and one loss against SSC Napoli , PSV Eindhoven and AIK Solna . In the second round, Dnipro was eliminated after a 2-0 defeat away and a 1-1 at home against Swiss representatives FC Basel . After the success in the playoff round, Dnipro reached the group stage of the Europa League 2013/14 at the end of August 2013 . They finished second in their group and qualified for the knockout round, in which they were eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur .
Final entry in the Europa League 2015
In the Europa League season 2014/15 Dnipro reached behind Inter Milan and before FK Qarabağ Ağdam and AS Saint-Étienne again in second place in the group stage and qualified for the intermediate round, in which they defeated Olympiacos . As a result, they prevailed against Ajax Amsterdam , Club Bruges and SSC Napoli . They were only the second Ukrainian team to reach the final, where they lost 3-2 to defending champions Sevilla FC . This 2nd place can be seen as the greatest success so far at European level. The endgame was overshadowed by the collapse of the player Matheus .
Because of the war in eastern Ukraine, all home games took place in the Olympic Stadium in Kiev for security reasons . Their style of play on the way to the final was characterized by a defensive tactic. By the final, Dnipro only allowed eleven goals in 16 games, but only scored 15. They committed more fouls and received more yellow cards than any other team participating in the Europa League.
Relegation to dissolution
From the 2016/17 season onwards, Dnipro had to be forced down several times due to unpaid debts. After the club had to start the amateur league with -3 points in the 2018/19 season and mostly with U18 players, it stopped playing for the 2019/20 season.
