Derek Owusu Boateng (born May 2, 1983 in Accra , Ghana ) is a Ghanaian football player . Originally used as a striker, Boateng later moved to defensive midfield.
Career
At the age of 16, Boateng, who was born and raised in the Ghanaian capital, signed a contract in Kalamata , Greece , where he scored nine goals in 27 games. In early 2001 he moved to the top Greek club Panathinaikos Athens , where he also made his first appearances in the UEFA Champions League . In the same year he went to the junior soccer world championship in Argentina for his home country and reached the final there with his team, in which they lost 3-0 to the hosts.
In 2002 Boateng was unable to secure a regular place at Panathinaikos , where he had made 24 appearances (three goals). After a move to England failed due to a lack of a work permit ( Middlesbrough FC had shown interest), Boateng moved to Greek league rivals OFI Crete . There he could not prevail, however, and only made twelve appearances (one goal).
His Swedish advisor Patrik Mörk then referred him to the Swedish first division club AIK Solna for the 2003/04 season . There he suffered an injury in the first game from which he did not recover during the course of the season. The rest of the team also had a pitch-black season, so that the AIK was relegated from Fotbollsallsvenskan in the end . Boateng, who was judged to be a bad purchase in Solna, then tried to find a new club across Europe, but ultimately stayed with AIK. In the course of the preliminary round of the 2004/05 season he fought his way to a regular place, and the AIK was nine points ahead of champions of the Superettan and thus managed direct promotion to the top division.
In the following season Boateng confirmed his good form, and after making his debut for the Ghanaian national team in a friendly match against the French first division side Nice, he was appointed to the Ghana squad for the World Cup in Germany in spring 2006 . There he was used in the preliminary round at half time against the Czech Republic (2-0) for the first time and against the USA (2-1) and in the round of 16 against Brazil (0-3).
Although he had signed a contract with AIK before the World Cup until 2007, Boateng moved to the Israeli first division club Beitar Jerusalem for the 2006/07 season . On January 22nd, 2009 1. FC Köln officially announced Derek Boateng's engagement on its homepage.
On July 31, 2009 Derek Boateng moved to Getafe FC , as he saw no more prospects in Cologne due to the strong competition from Petit and newcomer Maniche . Boateng quickly established himself as a regular player in Spain and is very popular with fans because of his rustic way of playing.
For the 2013/14 season Boateng moved to Fulham , where he signed a contract until the end of the season.
