Tony George (2007)

Tony George (born December 30, 1959 ; born Anton Hulman George ) is the former owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), former president of Hulman & Company and former team boss of the Vision Racing team. Tony is the grandson of Tony Hulman , who bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after the end of World War II .

After Joe Cloutier's death in 1989, Tony George became President and CEO of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation . During his early years at Motor Speedway, he oversaw new projects on the circuit (Tower Terrace Suites, reconstruction of the pit lanes and new control towers).

Before Tony George's arrival, the IMS traditionally had only one race, the Indianapolis 500 . After an agreement with NASCAR , the Brickyard 400 debuted on August 6, 1994 with Jeff Gordon as the winner.

George also helped bring Formula 1 to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The first Formula 1 race took place in 2000 ; for this purpose, a separate circuit had been built within the oval. The motorcycle world championship followed in 2008 .

In addition to the merits for the track, Tony George also founded the Indy Racing League (IRL) to compete with the IndyCar World Series at the time , as he did not see the importance of his track being emphasized enough in the existing racing series. After the IRL was initially ridiculed, it took over the Champ Car series in early 2008 after its bankruptcy. Since 2003, "his" series has been known as the IndyCar Series, which was previously protected . Until the end of January 2010, George was team leader of the Vision Racing team, which was founded in 2005 .

At the end of June 2009, Tony George was relieved of his most important offices within the Indy Empire (chairing Hulman & Company and chairing the IMS). However, he remained a member of the joint supervisory board, from which he resigned in January 2010. On February 17, 2011, however, he was reappointed to the Supervisory Board.
