February 1940 in Ungvár / Uzhhorod , Carpathian Ukraine , Hungary ) is a retired Soviet football player and Hungarian-Ukrainian coach .
Szabó is counted among the best Soviet midfielders, he won four Soviet championships with his home club Dynamo Kiev in the 1960s and the bronze medal at the football tournament of the 1972 Summer Olympics with the Soviet national team . Since the end of the USSR, Szabó has coached Dynamo Kiev and the Ukrainian national football team several times , but at the beginning of November 2007 he resigned from his last engagement as Dynamo coach because of his poor health.
player
Szabó began his career as a player in 1957 with the lower-class club "Chimik Kalusch ", but moved in his debut year to the at least second-rate club Spartak from his hometown before moving to Dynamo Kiev in 1959. With Kiev he won the championship four times and the Cup of the USSR twice in ten years. In 1970 he played for a year with Zorya Vorozhylowhrad before ending his active time with Dynamo Moscow in 1971/72 ; In his senior year he was able to lead Dynamo Moscow as captain into the final of the Cup Winners' Cup , which was just lost.
Szabó played 40 times for the USSR and nine times for the country's Olympic team, scoring a total of nine goals. During the 1962 World Cup in Chile, he was in the squad, but was not used, at the 1966 World Cup he was fourth as a regular with the team, at the 1972 Olympic Games he won a bronze medal.
Trainer
After his active career, he began a career as a coach in the 1970s. In 1977 he briefly coached the first division side Zorya Voroschylowhrad, the following year the third division SKA Kiew , but in the same year he took over the first division side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk , whose relegation he could no longer prevent and which he was in danger of relegation in the second division , dismissed. Then Szabó interrupted his coaching career until the fall of the USSR. In 1993 he became the coach of Dynamo Kiev, which he remained with brief interruptions until 1997. Under Szabó's leadership, the club became Ukrainian champions every year. In addition, he was coach of the Ukrainian national team in 1994 and from 1996 onwards , but since they failed with him in the qualifying play-offs for both the 1998 World Cup and the Euro 2000 , the Ukrainian federation dismissed him in 1999. At the same time he had already become vice-president of Dynamo Kiev and also took over the trainer office several times: so in 2004/05 and in autumn 2007. On the latter occasion, however, he resigned as a trainer after only eight weeks due to serious health problems.
