Career

Player career

Juande Ramos began his footballing career at FC Elche in the Primera División , where he was part of the professional squad from 1973 to 1977. During this time he was only used as a substitute in three league games. In total, he played less than 20 minutes. After several positions at lower-class clubs, Ramos ended his playing career at the age of 28 due to a serious knee injury.

Coaching career

He also began as a coach in the youth team of FC Elche , where he took over the second team in 1991 and worked as an assistant coach for the first team. After numerous positions at smaller Spanish clubs, a promotion to the Primera División in the 1995/96 season with CD Logroñés , and a year in the youth of FC Barcelona , Juande Ramos made his breakthrough as coach of the Madrid club Rayo Vallecano . In his first season he was promoted to the Primera División, in 1999/2000 he reached ninth place in the championship, to this day the best placement in the club's history, and the following year Ramos was able to take the small club to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup lead.

In the 2001/02 season he took over the newly promoted club Betis Sevilla and immediately qualified for the UEFA Cup with a surprising sixth final place. His subsequent move to Espanyol Barcelona ended after five matchdays due to serious disagreements with the club's board of directors. In the 2003/04 season he reached tenth place in the table with Málaga FC .

In the summer of 2005, Sevilla FC signed Ramos, and he celebrated his greatest successes as a coach at the club from the Andalusian capital. His team won the UEFA Cup and the European Supercup in his first year . Together with Frank Rijkaard, he was voted UEFA Coach of the Year . The following season he defended the UEFA Cup with Sevilla , won the Spanish Cup and finished the league in third place. In the summer of 2007 he won the Spanish Super Cup against champions Real Madrid .

In October 2007, Ramos surprisingly left Seville to accept an offer from Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League , where he succeeded the sacked Martin Jol . After only four months with the capital city, he won the League Cup, the first title of the Londoners after a nine-year break. After the worst start to the season since 1912, Ramos was released on October 26, 2008. Harry Redknapp took over his post .

After Bernd Schuster's dismissal on December 9, 2008, Ramos became Real Madrid's coach . There he received a contract until the end of the 2008/09 season, which was not extended after a poor season as second in the table with nine points behind champions FC Barcelona . In September 2009 Ramos succeeded the dismissed Zico at PFK ZSKA Moscow , where he was dismissed on October 26th.

From 2010 to 2014 he was with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine. He led the club to the runner-up in 2014, the best placement since 1993. He left Dnipro because of the political situation in Ukraine.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he returned to Malaga FC with a contract that ran until 2019 , where he succeeded Javi Gracia who led the club to eighth place in 2015/16. Between Christmas and New Year, the contract was canceled, primarily at Ramos's instigation because of the bad relationship with the club's boss, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani. At this point in time, Malaga was in 11th place after 16 match days. His assistant, the Uruguayan ex-Málaga player Marcelo Romero , was immediately appointed as his successor.
