Marcelo Romero , full name Clever Marcelo Romero Silva , (born July 4, 1976 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Player career

Marcelo Romero is the cousin of the football player Diego Rolán . From the Clausura 1994 up to and including the Clausura 1995 he was part of the squad of Club Atlético Peñarol in the Primera División . Since the Apertura in 19966 he played for the first division defensor Sporting . From the Clausura 1997 he is again listed as a player in Peñarols. That year he won the Uruguayan championship with the Montevideo club. A second title win in the national championship followed in 1999. In this second period of membership of the "Aurinegros" team, which lasted up to the Torneo Clasificatorio 2001, he played a total of 84 first division games and scored five goals. In the 2001/02 season he started working for the Spanish club Málaga . There are 119 games (four goals) for him in the Primera División and after he was relegated to the second division with the club in 2006, eleven more matches (no goal) in the 2006/07 season in the Segunda División . During this period, Málaga FC won the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup . In the 2002/03 season, when his compatriot Darío Silva was also part of the squad, Romero's side reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup . In the quarter-finals , Boavista Porto failed on penalties. The last career station in Spain will be FC Lucena in the 2007/08 season . From his league debut for the new employer on January 20, 2008 in the 3-2 away defeat against Melilla to his last appearance on May 3, 2008, he ran there 14 times in the league. He didn't score a goal.

On February 4, 2009, he signed a contract with the Carolina RailHawks in the United States , who were playing in the USL First Division at the time . Until his last appearance for the Celeste on June 6, 2004, he completed 25 games and scored no goal.

Coaching

After his active career, he was initially a youth coach at Alhaurín de la Torre CF and eventually took over the first team in this role. He then worked at Marbella FC as sports director.

On May 30, 2014, he signed a one-year contract as an assistant coach at FC Málaga . As such, he worked on the side of head coach Javi Gracia and his successor Juande Ramos . After Ramos was relieved of his duties on December 27, 2016, Romero took over his position the following day until the end of the season. The team was at this point after 16 matchdays in 11th place in the Primera División .
