The Marbella Fútbol Club (formerly Unión Deportiva Marbella ), also known as FC Marbella in German-speaking countries , is a Spanish soccer team from Marbella in the autonomous community of Andalusia . The club was founded in 1997 as the successor to the ruinous Club Atlético Marbella . The club plays home games at the Estadio Municipal Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas , which has space for 7,300 spectators.
history
The association was founded in 1997 immediately after the dissolution of CA Marbella and belonged to Jesús Gil , who was at the same time president and main shareholder of Atlético Madrid , as well as mayor of Marbella. The first season the club played in the Primera División de Andalucía and made it directly to the Tercera División , where you could complete your group as champions in 2001, but missed promotion in the play-offs. But this succeeded two years later in the 2002/03 season. Since then, the club has played in Segunda División B , the third Spanish football league. In 2007 the club was taken over by businessmen Ian Radford and Wayne Elliot. In the 2008/09 season the club reached the promotion playoffs, but failed there because of Lorca Deportiva . In the following season, the club had to accept relegation to the fourth division after seven years.
On February 13, 2013, the association was sold to a Russian investor group around Alexander Grinberg. On June 28th, Unión was renamed Marbella Fútbol Club by the new President Grinberg in the hope of gaining fans abroad with the new name. The 2013/14 season ended with promotion to the Segunda División B after defeating the CD Eldense in the playoffs.
