The Qarabağ Futbol Klubu , known in German-speaking countries as Qarabağ Ağdam , is an Azerbaijani football club that originally came from Ağdam in the historical Karabakh region . Since the occupation of the city by Armenian units in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1993, the club has been based in Baku , as Agdam became a ghost town . Together with Neftçi Baku and the PFK Turan Tovuz , the Qarabağ Ağdam is a permanent guest in the Premyer Liqası , the first division of the country. The club plays its games in the Azərsun arena with 5800 seats.
history
1951-1968
After a football stadium was built in Agdam in 1951, there were attempts to set up a professional team. The association emerged from these attempts, at that time under the name " Məhsul ". In 1966 the team played for the first time for the Azerbaijani championship and came fourth. The greatest success was second place in 1968. After 1968 the club ran into financial problems and did not take part in the championship for a long time.
1977-1990
In 1977 the association was re-established under the name " Şəfəq ". In 1988 it got its current name and won the Azerbaijani championship.
1991 – today
The collapse of the Soviet Union led to war between Azerbaijan and its neighbor Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region . As part of the war, Armenian separatists occupied the city of Agdam and keep it occupied to this day. The city is almost completely destroyed. The association fled to the capital Baku.
After the country gained independence in 1991, they played in the Premyer Liqası, founded in 1992 . In the second season you won the championship title when you prevailed in the championship playoffs. With the victory in the cup final against İnşaatçı Baku you won the double . In the following years the club always played for the championship. In 1997 they were only runner-up in the table, but the championship title was awarded due to "youth points" awarded for performance in the U-15 and U-16 selections. In the years 1998 to 2001 the association got into financial difficulties again.
In 2003 the championship was canceled. The instead held tournament for the 65th birthday of Neftçi Baku PFK was won in the final on penalties against the hosts, the championship title was only awarded unofficially for this season.
In 2009 they won the cup for the third time in the club's history when İnter Baku was defeated 1-0.
In the play-off games for the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League , the club played against Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on August 19 and 26, 2010 , but were eliminated after defeats in the two legs. In 2013/14 , the club met Eintracht Frankfurt in the play-offs for the Europa League and lost again two legs. After 21 years, the Azerbaijani championship was won for the fourth time in the same season.
In the season 2014/15 Qarabağ Agdam reached for the first time the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. After narrowly failing FC Red Bull Salzburg in the third qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League , they prevailed against FC Twente Enschede in the playoff round for the Europa League . In the group stage, however, they were eliminated as 3rd against Inter Milan , Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and AS Saint-Étienne .
As the first club in Azerbaijan, the club reached the group stage of the Champions League in 2017/18 after surviving three qualifying rounds .
