Ansi Agolli (born October 11, 1982 in Tirana , Albania ) is an Albanian national soccer player who plays on the position of the left full or central defender and is currently under contract with New York Cosmos. From 2005 to 2017 he played 73 full internationals for Albania .
Career
In the club
Agolli first played for the SK club in his hometown Tirana , the most successful club in Albania, which was Albanian champions while he was playing there in 2003, 2004 and 2005 . In 2003 he was briefly awarded to the league competitor KF Apolonia Fier .
In 2005 he moved to Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland and from there to FC Luzern in 2006 . This was followed by a detour to Finland to see Vaasan PS . After two seasons in which no more than a midfield position jumped out and an interim loan to his home club, which is now playing as KF Tirana , the move to the Ukrainian first division to Krywbas Krywyj Rih followed in 2009 . As the third last, the club narrowly escaped relegation. Agolli then moved to the Azerbaijani first division club Qarabağ Ağdam , who was last champion in 1993. After three seasons in the top third of the table, the championship was won again in 2014 after 21 years, and was defended in 2015 and 2016 . Already in 2010/11 he took part with Qarabağ in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League , but failed in the playoffs at Borussia Dortmund . A year later, the third qualifying round was the final destination, this time the Belgian club Club Brugge was stronger. In 2013/14 the playoffs were reached again, but Eintracht Frankfurt was stronger. In 2014/15 the club took part in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time, but failed in the third qualifying round at FC Red Bull Salzburg . In the playoffs of the UEFA Europa League 2014/15 , the Azerbaijanis were able to prevail against FC Twente Enschede due to the away goals rule and reach the group stage for the first time. Here, behind Inter Milan and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk , one point behind took third place, which meant the elimination. A year later they failed again in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, this time to Celtic Glasgow . The playoffs for the group stage of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League were successfully completed against BSC Young Boys , but the group stage was bottom of the group behind Tottenham Hotspur , RSC Anderlecht and AS Monaco . In 2015 and 2016 he won the Azerbaijani Cup with Qarabağ .
In March 2019 he then moved on to the second division New York Cosmos in the USA .
In the national team
He made his debut for the Albanian national team almost a month before his 23rd birthday on September 3, 2005 in a 2-1 victory in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup against Kazakhstan , when he was 0-0 in the second half for Altin Haxhi was substituted on. After the win, the Albanians had little chance of qualifying for the World Cup, but gambled them away in the last two games, in which he was not used. After another international match in March 2006, it took 29 months until his third international match and during that time Albania missed qualifying for the European Championship in 2008 . To qualify for the 2010 World Cup , he was then considered again and was used in seven games. During this time he also scored his first international goal in the friendly against Georgia on June 10, 2009 , making it 1-1. The Albanians could not qualify for the World Cup again as fifth in the group. The qualification for the Euro 2012 , in which he was used in eight out of ten games, and the qualification for the 2014 World Cup only ended the Albanians in penultimate place.
The qualification for the Euro 2016 went surprisingly well for the Albanians. They started with a 1-0 win in Portugal against the group favorites, who, however, competed without Cristiano Ronaldo . This was followed by a 1: 1 against Danes, who were also rated higher, and a 3: 0 victory at the green table against Serbia (see: Football international match Serbia - Albania 2014 ). The home games against Portugal and Serbia were lost, but enough points were scored in the other games to reach the finals of a major football tournament for the first time as second in the group.
On May 21, 2016 he was appointed to the preliminary squad with 27 players for the European Championship finals. On May 31, he was one of the 23 players in the final squad . As a regular player, he played all three tournament games against Switzerland, France and Romania over the full season, then the team was eliminated. In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the European Championship , he was part of the team and was used in eight out of ten games, seven times as captain. The Albanians could not prevail against the two ex-world champions Italy and Spain and were eliminated in third place. After that it was not used again.
