In the category Superiore 2008/09 (also called Kampionati Shqiptra ) twelve clubs in Albania's top football league played for the championship. The Albanian championship was held for the 70th time, for the eleventh time under the name CATEGORY Superiore. The season began on August 24, 2008 and ended on May 23, 2009. KF Tirana became the champion . A total of 427 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 2.16 goals per game. The top scorer was Migen Memelli from master KF Tirana, who scored 23 goals.
The record champions KF Tirana moved into qualifying for the UEFA Champions League by winning the title . He scored the most goals (58), conceded the fewest (27) and thus won the 24th championship title in the club's history. After the three league rounds of eleven games each, KF Tirana was four points ahead of runner-up Vllaznia Shkodra . Defending champion Dinamo Tirana finished third. This moved Shkodra and Dinamo Tirana into qualifying for the UEFA Europa League . Cup winner Flamurtari Vlora also achieved this competition. The sixth in the league defeated champions KF Tirana 2-1 in the final and thus prevented the capital club from double .
The teams in 11th and 12th had to be relegated directly. The tenth and ninth had to play relegation games against the third and fourth of the 2nd division . The relegation battle was close: The last KF Elbasani was only three points behind the first non- relegation place , which was occupied by newcomer Apolonia Fier . The eleventh KS Lushnja was relegated directly, but only missed a relegation place because of the worse goal difference compared to Partizani Tirana . The second club besides Partizani that had to go into relegation was Bylis Ballsh , also a newcomer to the league. KF Laçi and Skënderbeu Korça rose directly from the second division for the new season . Also new to the league for the 2009/10 season were Kastrioti Kruja and Gramozi Erseka . They prevailed in the relegation against the two first division clubs.
