Klubi i Futbollit Skënderbeu Korça is an Albanian football club from Korça , which used to be called SK Skënderbeu Korça . In the 2010/11 season, after 78 years, the club was again champions of the first Albanian league, theategoria Superiore . As a result, the title was defended five times.
Skënderbeu plays its home games in the Skënderbeu Stadium , which after a major renovation in 2009/10 can accommodate around 12,000 spectators. International games are often played in the Elbasan Arena .
The association is named after the Albanian prince Skanderbeg .
history
The club, founded in 1909, was one of the founding members of the first Albanian league in 1930 , where they immediately became runner-up. In 1933 the Albanian championship was won for the first time. As a result, the club played in the first division for decades, but without ever achieving success. Third places were the best results. In the cup , Korça occasionally made it to the final - but here too he never won. In 1975 Skënderbeu reached third from bottom of the championship only one relegation place and had to relegate.
Already in the championship 1976/77 Skënderbeu played first class again. The league was often unsuccessful in the following, so that Korça played again and again in the second highest league . In 2006 the club had to relegate again from the Superiore category, but returned to the top division after just one season. The club spent the 2008/09 season again in the second highest division. In the 2009/10 season , the league was preserved in the top division.
In the following year, the club became Albanian football champions for the second time after 78 years. Skënderbeu managed to defend the title five times in a row. The club owes its success to the entry of major investors, including the boss of Red Bull in Albania and the boss of the local oil company Taçi Oil , Rezart Taçi. Other investors were politicians and the businessman Ardjan Takaj, who worked in the betting business. The success led to a football euphoria in Korça.
In 2013 Korça won the SuperKupa for the first time after losing the finals to KF Tirana in the previous two years . The success was repeated in 2014. In 2018 Skënderbeu won the trophy for the first time .
In June 2016, UEFA fined the club for match-fixing and banned it from international competitions for one year. The sentence has been upheld by the International Court of Justice . In a second phase, in March 2018 UEFA imposed a ten-year exclusion of Skënderbeu from all European competitions and a fine of one million euros. This harshest penalty ever imposed by UEFA was justified by the fact that no one had ever cheated to such an extent before. 53 cases were detected. Representatives of the club said they were innocent and would go to the Sports Court.
In the 2018/19 season they did not play for the championship for the first time since 2011 and only came in fifth. The club finished fourth in the 2019/20 season .

European competitions
In the 2013/14 season , Skënderbeu Korça became the first Albanian team to advance to the third round of the Champions League qualification.
Two years later, for the 2015/16 season , the team made it into the third qualifying round of the Champions League. There, FC Milsami from Moldova was defeated 2-0 after a two-legged game, making the club the first Albanian team to advance to the play-offs for the Champions League group stage. The team was drawn to the Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb , but Skënderbeu Korça lost both games. As a result, Skënderbeu Korça entered the group stage of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League . There, after one win and five defeats, the team was only bottom of the group, but it remains the greatest international success to date to have reached the play-offs for the Champions League and the group stage of the UEFA Europa League for the first time.
For the 2016/17 season, Korça was excluded from UEFA due to match-fixing and replaced by FK Partizani Tirana .
In qualifying for the 2017/18 Europa League , Skënderbeu met Dinamo Zagreb again in the play-off game. This time the club was able to prevail thanks to the away goals rule and thus take part in the group stage of the competition again.
