The Elbasan Arena is a football stadium in Elbasan , Albania . The football club KF Elbasani and the Albanian national football team play home games in the stadium. With 12,800 seats, it is the fifth largest stadium in Albania. The stadium is located on the eastern edge of downtown Elbasan in the extension of the main boulevard. Until the renovation in 2014, it was called the Ruzhdi Bizhuta Stadium ( Albanian  Stadiumi Ruzhdi Bizhuta ).

In summer 2016, it was one of two stadiums in Albania that had a tartan track for athletics competitions .

history

Old stadium

The stadium was built in the 1960s and opened in 1967. It was named after the soccer player Ruzhdi Bizhuta (1920-1970) who played in 1946 and 1947 for Bashkimi Elbasanas, as the local club was then called, and in 1946 for the Albanian national soccer team. In the first game of the Albanian national football team - the Albanians won 5-0 against a Montenegrin selection in Shkodra - he scored the second goal after Qamil Teliti had already scored the opening goal in the 29th minute.

In 2014, the stadium was extensively renovated, as Albania did not have a stadium that met the requirements of UEFA  for international matches. The stadium, the infrastructure and facade of which was completely renovated, was inaugurated on October 8th with a ceremony and a friendly match between the national team and a youth team from Elbasan. On October 11th, the Albanian national team met Denmark in the new stadium and drew 1-1.

Stadium for international games

In January 2014 it was announced that the national team's games would be played in the Ruzhdi Bizhuta Stadium , while the Qemal Stafa Stadium , the national stadium in the capital Tirana , would be demolished and rebuilt. For this purpose, the Ruzhdi Bizhuta Stadium was renovated for about 5.5 million euros , making the stadium the largest investment in Albanian football.

The costs, which were originally supposed to be a third less, were partly borne by the Albanian football association Federata Shqiptare e Futbollit , the city of Elbasan and essentially the Albanian government. The renovation began in February 2014; The work includes a new, colorful facade, the renewal of the cloakrooms for players and officials, the installation of plastic seats in red and black, the establishment of a conference room, access for emergency vehicles to the pitch and a seating area for 400 guests of honor and 100 journalists, replacement of the Floodlights and the installation of electronic scoreboards and an electronic ticketing system to meet UEFA requirements for stadiums for international matches.

In Elbasan, all four home games of Albania were played during the qualification for the European Championship 2016 . It is expected that future games will also take place here - but the first three games of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup took place in Shkodra in the newly restored Loro Boriçi Stadium . KF Skënderbeu Korça also uses the stadium for international matches , for example in the 2015/16 season as part of the UEFA Champions League against FC MilsamiDinamo Zagreb , Beşiktaş Istanbul , Sporting Lisbon and Lokomotiv Moscow and Dinamo Zagreb in the 2017 UEFA Europa League / 18 .
