The Loro Boriçi Stadium ( Albanian Stadiumi Loro Boriçi ) is a football stadium in the Albanian city of Shkodra . It has served as a home for the KS Vllaznia Shkodra association since it opened. The facility has a capacity of 15,919 spectators. It was the largest stadium in Albania when it reopened in 2016 until the new Air Albania Stadium opened in Tirana in November 2019 .
history
The stadium was built in 1947. It was opened under the name Vojo Kushi Stadium . Vojo Kushi was an Albanian football club. It has since been renamed the Loro Boriçi Stadium . This name pays homage to Loro Boriçi , one of the most famous football players in Albania in the 1940s and 50s, who made a total of 23 international matches for Albania and played in the Italian Serie A for AS Roma and Lazio Rome . In addition, Boriçi, who was born in Shkodra, was the coach of the Albanian team, which in 1967 inflicted the so-called disgrace of Tirana on the German national team and screwed up the qualification for the European Championship . Loro Boriçi's homeland club was KS Vllaznia Shkodra . In 2001 the stadium was modernized and expanded to include larger stands on the north curve and the east side.
The Albanian national soccer team occasionally plays its home games in Shkodra, including an almost historic victory in 2003 against Russia in qualifying for the 2004 European soccer championship under Hans-Peter Briegel . In 2007 there was a draw against the Slovenian national football team in qualifying for the 2008 European Championship .
At the beginning of May 2015, renovation work began on the Loro Boriçi Stadium, which should have been completed by the international match between Albania and Serbia on October 8, 2015. The construction work took much longer, however, so that the stadium could only be opened in August 2016 with a friendly against Morocco . The original intention was to create a stadium for 17,500 or even 20,000 spectators.
The Kosovar national football team played their first official qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup in the Loro Boriçi Stadium, as Kosovo's largest stadiums, the Adem Jashari Stadium in Mitrovica and the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Prishtina , were in Remodeling found.
