The championship was played in a regular season with a round trip. Each team competed twice against each other team. The two bottom of the table were relegated directly to the then still second-rate category e dytë . In contrast to the previous year, the champions moved into the European Cup this year , while the runner-up qualified for the UEFA Cup .
A total of 459 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 2.5 goals per game. The top scorer with 20 goals was Kujtim Majaci from KF Apolonia Fier .
After the superior title win by 17 Nëntori in the previous season, a close race for the title developed in 1985/86. In the end, Dinamo Tirana prevailed due to the goal difference against Flamurtari Vlora with the same points and secured the thirteenth championship in the club's history. Thus they drew level with the previous sole record champion Partizani Tirana. Defending champion 17 Nëntori Tirana was also narrowly beaten, just one point behind the leaders. For Besëlidhja Lezha and the knocked-down newcomer Shkëndija Tirana, however, it was clear after the 26 match days that they would fall into second division.
