For the new season, the league was reduced from 16 to nine teams. In the 1955 season seven clubs were relegated or disbanded. There was no climber for 1956. The defending champion was KS Dinamo Tirana .
The championship was played in a regular season with a round trip. Each team competed twice against each other team. The teams in eighth and ninth place descended directly into the then still second-rate category e dytë .
A total of 193 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 2.7 goals per game. The top scorer with 17 goals was Refik Resmja from Partizani Tirana for the sixth time .
Dinamo Tirana was able to defend its unbeaten title with the largest lead over Partizani Tirana to date . It was Dinamo's sixth league title in seven years that they had narrowly beaten Partizani, and for the second straight season the club remained unbeaten. With the sixth championship Dinamo drew level with the previous sole record champions Puna Tirana , who finished third for the fourth time in a row in 1956. Puna Vlora was just behind in fourth place. Puna Korça and Puna Durrës were also able to save themselves from relegation in the dense midfield of the Liga . A very close decision about staying in the class was made between Puna Kavaja and Puna Shkodra with the same points . Because of the direct comparison won, Kavaja secured himself relegation, while Shkodra, who had always been in the front of the table in previous years, surprisingly had to go into the category e dytë together with the bottom of the table Puna Berat .
