The Tippeligaen 2009 was the 65th season of the highest Norwegian football league, which was held for the 19th time under the name Tippeligaen according to a sponsorship agreement. Between March 14th and November 1st, 2009, the 16 top division teams played against each other in a simple round-trip round, so that after 30 days of play the national champions, the other European Cup participants, the participants in the relegation games and the relegated teams to the Adeccoligaen were certain. On November 12th after the second leg of the relegation final, all sporting decisions were made.
Rosenborg BK won the club's 21st championship title at the end of the season. The club referred Molde FK and last year's champion Stabæk IF to the other European Cup places. While FK Bodø / Glimt and Lyn Oslo had to relegate directly, Fredrikstad FK missed relegation as last year's runner-up in the relegation round.

Season course
Last year's champion Stabæk IF opened with a 1-1 draw in the home Telenor Arena against Lillestrøm SK on March 14, 2009, the season in which Arild Sundgot was celebrated by the away team as the first goal scorer of the season. After the team from Rosenborg BK, supervised by trainer Erik Hamrén , and Viking Stavanger won the championship lead on matchday one, the following matchdays saw a duel with Molde FK for the top position. By matchday eight, the two teams had played five points ahead of IK Start and Sandefjord Fotball , who were tied behind them , before a 2-2 draw with goals from Vegard Forren and an own goal from Alexander Tettey for Molde FK and Trond Olsen and Steffen Iversen , who equalized in stoppage time, was able to bring the competition closer. As a result, Rosenborg BK's team led by Mikael Dorsin , Vadim Demidov , Trond Olsen, Mikael Lustig and Anthony Annan, in particular because of the goals by Rade Prica and Steffen Iversen, and led after half of the season's games with seven without defeat Points ahead of Molde FK in the league.
In the relegation battle, Lyn Oslo had established itself at the end of the table. After the team had won their only win of the season to date with a 2-0 away win at FK Bodø / Glimt on matchday three, they then slipped in the table and were four points behind by the half-time of the season on matchday 15 due to eight draws the 13th place in the table kept contact with the middle table area. Before FK Bodø / Glimt occupied the last non-relegation places with Strømsgodset IF Lillestrøm SK and Tromsø IL, which were on the relegation site.
The race for the championship was decided early on, as Molde FK, second in the table, was able to reduce the gap to leaders Rosenborg BK to a maximum of four points and on matchday 26 with a difference of 17 points, overtaking was no longer mathematically possible. Only on matchday 27 there was something surprising to report, despite a 2-1 deficit in the meantime with goals from Bernt Hulsker and Cristian Bolaños in the final minutes , Start Kristiansand inflicted the only defeat of the season with a 3-2 away win at Rosenborg BK. The pursuers were also able to secure their participation in the Europa League early on matchday 29 . But the race for places in the UEFA Europa League and relegation places was soon decided. Two game days before the end of the season, Molde FK was seven points ahead of fourth place, and on the penultimate game day Stabæk IF also secured early participation in the European Cup. At the end of the table, Lyn Oslo had only managed to win another season against IK Start, so that the club had lost all arithmetic possibilities on matchday 27. Even the previously placed FK Bodø / Glimt, which slipped to the relegation zone on the 26th matchday, could not limit the deficit that built up in the following matchdays and was already a relegated team four points ahead of the last matchday, as did Fredrikstad FK as a participant stuck to the relegation.
After Fredrikstad FK had said goodbye to regular time with a 5-0 away win against bottom Lyn Oslo, the club missed Sarpsborg 08 , fifth in the second division season , with a 2-0 defeat in the semi-finals of the relegation round with two goals from Martin Wiig the relegation. After the second division third Kongsvinger IL had beaten fourth in the table Sogndal Fotball in the other semifinals , the two teams met in the return leg in the relegation final. After the first leg ended with a 3-2 win in front of a home crowd for Sarpsborg 08 , in which Edier Frejd was able to shorten stoppage time, Kongsvinger IL succeeded in advancing through a 3-1 win in the second leg due to the one more goal scored the Tippeligaen for the following season.
In addition to qualifying for the European Cup through the league, the Norwegian national cup winner also qualified for the UEFA Europa League. For the first time in the club's history, Aalesunds FK won the title and moved into the European Cup as thirteenth in the table.
