The Hovedserien 1952/53 was the ninth season of the highest Norwegian football league and the fifth season under the name Hovedserien . The season began on August 3, 1952 and ended with the final on June 21, 1953.

The 16 teams played against each other in two groups, each with eight teams, in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 14 games. The two last placed had to be relegated.

The champion was determined in a final game between the two group winners. Compared to the previous season, some of the groups have been redistributed.

The newly promoted Larvik TIF became Norwegian champions for the first time.

Of the promoters, only Ranheim IL had to relegate.
