The Tippeligaen 1998 was the 54th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the eighth season under the name Tippeligaen . The season began on April 13,  1998 and ended on October 31, 1998 with the second relegation game.

The fourteen teams in the league played against each other in a simple round-trip, so that each team played 26 games. The last two placed had to be relegated. The third from last had to play in the first and second leg against the third placed in the 1st divisjon to stay in the Tippeligaen.

Season course

Rosenborg BK won the Norwegian championship for the seventh time in a row. It was also the 13th championship for the team. At the beginning of the season Viking was able to keep up with Rosenborg BK and Molde FK . From the beginning of the second half of the season, the two teams then separated from the rest of the league. In the meantime, Molde even had a lead of up to five points over Rosenborg. But then Rosenborg won seven games in a row and was able to work out a five-point lead. On the penultimate matchday Rosenborg secured the championship. Molde managed to secure second place despite losing four of their last five games. Stabæk Fotball won the cup competition for the first time in its history . The newly promoted Moss FK and Vålerenga Fotball were able to hold their own in the Tippeligaen .
