The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last three teams had to be relegated.

Start Kristiansand became Norwegian champion for the second time.
It was very tight from the start. Although only two teams (IK Start and Bryne IL ) were at the top for the whole season , up to five teams had the chance to become champions. After the 19th matchday start, Bryne IL, Viking Stavanger and Lillestrøm SK were tied on the first four places, and Moss FK was also only two points behind in fifth. On the last day of the match, only Bryne IL and Start had the opportunity to become champions because of the significantly better goal difference. With the winning goal against Rosenborg Trondheim in the 83rd minute, Start Kristiansand finally made it.
The relegation was also marked by drama and was even decided in favor of Lyn by a goal in the last minute of the game of the direct relegation rivals Molde FK against Lyn Oslo . Of the promoted Fredrikstad FK , Lyn Oslo and Molde FK, only Molde had to relegate from the 1st Divisjon.
