The 1. Divisjon 1985 was the 41st season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 23rd season under the name 1. Divisjon . The regular season began on April 27, 1985 and ended on October 12, 1985.

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last two teams had to be relegated. The third from last had to go to a relegation round against the two runners-up in the 2nd division (group A and B).

Rosenborg Trondheim became Norwegian champions for the fourth time.
In the first half of the season there was a duel between Rosenborg and Lillestrøm SK . The other teams could not intervene. At the beginning of the second half of the season, Lillestrøm continued to pull away, Rosenborg joined the other pursuers. After 13 match days, the lead was five points. But since Rosenborg won all games from the 17th to the 21st matchday, the decisive match between Rosenborg and Lillestrøm took place on the last matchday. Since the latter was one point ahead, a draw was enough for them. However, Rosenborg won this game and decided the championship.
Of the promoters Brann Bergen and Mjøndalen IF , only Mjøndalen could hold the class.

Relegation
In contrast to the previous year, Moss FK could not prevail in the relegation against the competitors and was relegated to the 2nd division. Tromsø IL rose to the 1st division for the first time. Sogndal remained second class.
